Google is going to let kids use its Gemini AI

According to a report by The New York Times, Google is sending out emails to parents who use its Family Link parental controls, informing them that their children will soon have access to Gemini AI Apps on their monitored Android devices.

Gemini will provide children with features like homework assistance and story reading. Google assures parents that their children’s data will not be used to train AI. However, the company does caution parents in the email that Gemini may make mistakes and that children could come across unwanted content.

Google recommends that parents have a conversation with their children about Gemini, emphasizing that the AI is not human and advising them not to share sensitive information with the chatbot.

Children under the age of 13 will have the ability to enable and use Gemini independently through Google Family Link. This platform is designed for parents to monitor their children’s device usage, set restrictions, and safeguard them from harmful content. Google spokesperson Karl Ryan confirmed to The Verge via email that parents have the option to disable access through Family Link and will receive a notification when their child accesses Gemini for the first time.
