Do you have a favorite iPhone app that you can’t live without? For me, it’s the Nest app for Google’s thermostats.
Nest Labs, founded in 2010 by former Apple engineers Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, is known for its innovative products. The first-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, launched in 2011, was a game-changer in the smart home industry. Over the years, Nest Labs has expanded its product line to include smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and security cameras. The latest Nest thermostat, the fourth generation, offers advanced features and functionality.
Google acquired Nest Labs in 2014, further solidifying its position in the smart home market. One of the key features of the Nest app is the ability to control your home’s temperature remotely. Whether you’re at home or away, you can easily adjust the thermostat from your iPhone, ensuring comfort and energy efficiency.
Recently, Google Home announced that it would no longer support the first and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats after October 25, 2025. While basic functionality will still be available, smart features like Home/Away Assist will no longer work. Affected customers have the option to upgrade to the latest Nest thermostat at a discounted price.
Like Apple products, electronic devices also have a lifespan, and it’s not uncommon for older models to become obsolete. While the transition may be disappointing for some users, it’s a reminder of the fast-paced nature of technology. If you own a first or second-generation Nest thermostat, now might be the time to consider an upgrade.
