Apple is set to elevate the Peanuts gang with Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical, an animated special that brings a new format after 35 years.
The special was initially scheduled for release on July 18, but Apple quietly changed the premiere date to August 15. The update was made between June 29 and July 11, as the press release from May 20 was quietly modified to reflect the new date.
The new premiere date seems to be final, as Apple unveiled an official trailer this week to give us a glimpse of what to expect.
Summer camp is calling. With original songs by Ben Folds and Jeff Morrow, join Snoopy and friends in their first musical in over three decades.
In this new musical, Charlie Brown returns to his cherished summer camp, accompanied by his little sister, Sally, on her first visit. However, the gang receives distressing news that the camp is closing due to lack of interest. In response, they unite and organize a concert to save it.
From the iconic A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965 to Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown in 2010, numerous specials have brought Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the gang into our homes over the years. Among these were two musicals, the classic You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown in 1967 and Snoopy: The Musical in 1975, which originally debuted as live stage productions before becoming TV specials in 1985 and 1988, adding to the Peanuts classics.
However, the pace slowed in the new millennium. Following the 2010 special aired in 2011, there was nearly a decade of silence, interrupted only by 2015’s The Peanuts Movie, until Apple secured the Peanuts franchise and made Apple TV+ the hub for all things Peanuts in 2020.
Since then, Apple has successfully continued the tradition with new Peanuts specials under the “Snoopy Presents” series, delivering heartwarming stories focused on character development. Beginning with Auld Lang Syne, which was rebranded with the “Snoopy Presents” tagline, subsequent specials like It’s the Small Things, Charlie Brown for Earth Day and Welcome Home, Franklin have explored different aspects of the beloved characters.
With Auld Lang Syne marking the first new Charlie Brown holiday special in over two decades, it’s fitting that A Summer Musical continues this trend for Snoopy’s 75th Anniversary. This special takes a new approach by premiering directly on the small screen, rather than being adapted from a stage play.
Additionally, Apple is working on a feature-length film that will see Charlie Brown and the gang embarking on an epic adventure to the “Big City.” While most historic Charlie Brown specials are available for streaming on Apple TV+, The Peanuts Movie remains an exception due to rights issues.
