God of War Ragnarok PC review bombed over controversial Sony policy

After nearly two years since its initial release on PS5, Sony’s God of War Ragnarok has finally made its way to PC, but it’s receiving mixed reviews on Steam. Currently, it holds a 65% user rating. The main point of contention? Sony’s requirement for a PlayStation Network account to access its PC games.

Many are questioning the need for a PSN sign-up for a singleplayer game like God of War Ragnarok, especially since there is no essential online or multiplayer component. There are also concerns about Steam users in regions where PSN is not available being unable to experience the conclusion of Kratos’s journey, despite purchasing and playing the game on PC.

So why is Sony enforcing this requirement? The likely reason is that as more of its exclusive titles make their way to PC, Sony is aiming to bring this player base into its larger PlayStation ecosystem, which could be beneficial for future hardware and gaming services.

However, the PSN requirement is proving to be a barrier for some dedicated PC players. Sony’s implementation of this policy post-launch for games like Helldivers 2 earlier this year has also affected its reputation. Players who had already bought the game were suddenly required to have a PlayStation Network account to continue playing.

As Sony continues to release its coveted exclusives on PC, it will be interesting to see if the backlash subsides over time. Despite the review bombing, God of War Ragnarok remains one of the standout open-world action games of the current console generation.

In our review of God of War Ragnarok, we described it as, “Kratos has evolved significantly since his early adventures in the Aegean Sea. The God of War series has also made great strides, pushing the boundaries of hack and slash action to new heights and establishing itself as a major player in modern gaming. As winter approaches, God of War Ragnarok offers an immersive adventure to dive into.”

Since its launch in late 2022, the game has received a substantial Valhalla update, introducing a host of new content and features.
