Genesis finally unwraps its new GMR-001 hypercar

Everyone was anticipating the reveal of the Genesis Magma Racing GMR-001 Hypercar, and when it finally appeared, the crowd erupted in applause. Painted in a striking orange hue that transitions to a deeper red towards the rear, this race car is set to make its debut in the World Endurance Championship in 2026.

Although it may seem unconventional for a mainstream automaker like Genesis to venture into creating a high-performance race car, the GMR-001 Hypercar has been a passion project for the brand. The development of this project was officially confirmed by Genesis and GMR in 2024, after being dubbed the “worst kept secret in motorsport” by Goodwood Road & Racing.

Competing in the LMDh (Le Mans Daytona Hybrid) category, the GMR-001 Hypercar boasts a twin-turbo hybrid V8 setup. While the LMDh rules specify a maximum of 670 horsepower, specific details about the car remain tightly under wraps.

Introducing Genesis’ first hypercar

Genesis, a relatively young player in the automotive industry compared to its global counterparts, has made significant strides in a short period. The brand’s foray into luxury vehicles began in 2003 as a concept under Hyundai and later evolved into the Hyundai Genesis model in 2008. Genesis officially entered the market with the G80 and G90 sedans in the U.S. in 2016, followed by the GV80 SUV in 2020.

Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke ensured that the design of the hypercar, although distinct from Genesis’ conventional vehicles, still incorporates essential brand elements. For example, the GMR-001 Hypercar features Genesis’ iconic double line lighting at the front and rear. The car’s underbody is designed for optimal aerodynamics, with features such as a flat plate for efficiency and airflow management elements. The hypercar also showcases geometric designs with Korean lettering for “Magma,” paying homage to its Korean roots.

While Genesis has showcased bold concept cars like the X Gran Equator, the hypercar represents a significant leap forward in the brand’s design and engineering capabilities. Donckerwolke emphasizes the shift in mentality towards research and development within Genesis, driven by the freedom of expression and innovation that motorsport allows.

“As a country, Korea is very humble,” Donckerwolke notes. “Sometimes we have to be a little more audacious, and I think motorsport will instill this attitude in the company, motivating many individuals.”
