11 bit studios, the developers of Frostpunk, have made the difficult decision to cancel a new console-oriented game known internally as Project 8. This decision was influenced by changing market trends and specific challenges faced during development. Unfortunately, this cancellation will result in layoffs for some 11 bit staff members, although opportunities for transitioning to other projects within the company are being offered to at least half of the affected team members, including some unannounced initiatives.
The cancelled game, Project 8, had a team of 37 members as of September 2024 and incurred development costs of approximately 48.4 million zloties. The project began in early 2018 with the intention of targeting console gamers, but market conditions and development challenges led to its cancellation.
Przemysław Marszał, the president of 11 bit studios, expressed disappointment in the cancellation, citing the evolving preferences of players for narrative-driven games as a contributing factor. Despite this, he acknowledged that issues during development, including difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, ultimately led to the decision to cancel Project 8.
The decision was also influenced by budget concerns and revised sales forecasts, which raised doubts about the project’s profitability. While it is unclear how many layoffs will result from this cancellation, Marszał stated that more than half of the Project 8 team will have opportunities to transition to other projects within the company.
Looking ahead, 11 bit studios have upcoming projects like The Alters, a sci-fi game that promises a unique gameplay experience. The studio has also published successful third-party games like Indika and Moonlighter. Despite the setback of Project 8’s cancellation, the company remains focused on delivering innovative and engaging gaming experiences.
The cancellation of Project 8 is undoubtedly disappointing, but it reflects the challenges faced by game developers in an ever-changing industry. Best wishes to all those affected by the decision, and here’s hoping for a brighter future in the gaming world.
