From ‘AI Doctor’ to ‘Health+’

Apple is set to revamp its Health app next year with the introduction of a new “Health+” service featuring an AI assistant. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this new service could position Apple as a leader in the health AI chatbot space.

Gurman shared this insight in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter:

Let’s shift our focus to a feature that hasn’t been discussed in a while: a revamped Health app with a new Health+ service. This will include an AI agent to help users manage their health. If successful, Apple could be at the forefront of the health AI chatbot arena.

Speculation about an Apple “Health+” service has been circulating for years. Initially, there were reports suggesting Apple was developing a subscription service for healthcare professionals to access real-time patient health data. This was thought to be an extension of Apple’s Health Records feature, which enables users to access their medical records from participating institutions seamlessly.

Two years ago, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was working on various health features for iOS 17, including a Health app for iPad and a project called “Quartz” aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle through a dedicated app and subscription service. This service would help users establish positive habits related to exercise, nutrition, sleep, and emotional well-being.

While some of these features were introduced in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, such as the new iPad Health app and a basic mood tracking tool, the broader AI-driven health coach did not materialize. Instead, Apple redirected its focus towards developing an “AI doctor” through Project Mulberry, powered by a new AI agent to mimic a real doctor to some extent.

A recent Apple-supported health study published a research paper confirming Apple’s efforts to create large-scale AI models for analyzing users’ health data based on historical information without real-time monitoring.

Gurman anticipates the launch of Apple’s paid Apple Health+ service in 2026, offering an AI-based health coach for nutrition planning and medical advice. Initially expected to debut with iOS 19.4 (now iOS 26.4), Gurman revised the timeline to at least iOS 27, with the feature integrated directly into the Health app on iPhone and iPad.

There is no information on the pricing structure of the new service or whether it will be included in Apple’s Apple One services bundle. However, there are discussions about consolidating Apple Fitness+ and Health+ under a common umbrella following an executive reshuffle within Apple’s health services division.
