Fortnite coming back to iOS (in the EU) through new 'Epic Store'

Fortnite is set to make a return to the iPhone, but only for users residing in the European Union. Following Apple’s decision to allow third-party app stores on the iPhone within the EU, Epic Games has confirmed that Fortnite will be back on iOS in Europe in 2024.

Epic Games’ announcement follows strong criticism from CEO Tim Sweeney towards Apple’s new policies, which he referred to as “an anticompetitive scheme with excessive fees.” Despite this, Epic Games has decided to make Fortnite available for iPhone users once again.

In a social media post, Epic Games revealed plans to launch an “Epic Store” on the iPhone later this year. This move became possible due to Apple’s decision to open up the iPhone to third-party app stores in the European Union with the release of iOS 17.4. Fortnite will be downloadable through the Epic Store on iPhone.

“Fortnite will make its return to iOS in Europe in 2024, distributed through the upcoming Epic Games Store for iOS. More details will be shared as we navigate the regulatory process,” Epic stated. “We will continue to advocate to the courts and regulators that Apple is violating the law.”

Fortnite was removed from the App Store in August 2023 after Epic Games breached Apple’s App Store guidelines by introducing a direct payment option. This led to a prolonged legal battle between Apple and Epic, which is still ongoing.
