Ford has introduced its own branded specialty adapter to allow its EV customers access to Tesla Superchargers. The new adapter will be available alongside the existing Tesla-produced adapter, providing an option for customers who are still waiting for a complementary adapter. Ford has begun shipping the new adapter today.
The adapters are being produced by Lectron, an EV equipment supply company that has previously manufactured its own “Vortex” NACS to CCS adapters. Lectron had to recall its adapters in the past due to a design flaw that caused them to unlatch during charging.
Christopher Maiwald, CEO of Lectron, confirmed in a State of Charge interview that the issue has been resolved. Ford’s PR representative, Eddie Fernandez, stated in an email to The Verge that the new adapters are not linked to the ones Ford had advised customers to stop using. Fernandez explained, “The replacement adapters mentioned in that customer satisfaction program only affected a small portion of the total supply.”
Ford recently launched its Power Promise campaign to assist EV “fence-sitters” in transitioning to the electric vehicle lifestyle. The campaign includes a complimentary home charger with standard installation.
