Square Enix Announces Final Season “Party Goes On!” for Foamstars
Square Enix appears to be wrapping up support for Foamstars, their playful foam brawler. The final season has been aptly named “Party Goes On!”, showcasing a touch of irony from the developers.
According to Square Enix, the concluding update will bring expansions to enrich gameplay, including character shot customization and new enhancement elements like Prism Gems. These additions are aimed at ensuring players can continue enjoying the game in the long run.
“All online services will remain accessible even after the conclusion of the “PARTY GOES ON!” season. Additionally, Square Enix plans to host the FOAMSTARS CUP, a series of in-game events named after each character.
Moreover, to enable new players to fully experience FOAMSTARS, previous Season Passes will be re-released. Players will have the flexibility to switch between Season Passes at any time, progressing along their preferred Season Pass track and collecting items from past seasons. This feature will allow players to acquire all items from each season,” the announcement stated.
The PS5 exclusive game transitioned to a free-to-play model in October this year, though this move doesn’t seem to have significantly impacted the game’s popularity.
Initially launched in February as a PS Plus monthly game and exclusive to PS4 and PS5, Foamstars later shifted to a premium pricing model in March. However, the game failed to attract a substantial player base, prompting Square Enix to explore new business models. An added advantage of this shift is that Foamstars, as a free-to-play title, will no longer require a PS Plus subscription for online play.
Initially criticized by some gamers as a Splatoon imitator, Foamstars introduced unique features like the ability to construct 3D foam structures, adding depth to the gameplay beyond simple color coverage.
Reflecting on our Foamstars review, Jim remarked, “Foamstars is a creatively vibrant twist on hero shooters and Splatoon, though it may not resonate with players who struggle with its buoyant, fluid-based combat.”
