Sony and Housemarque’s Saros, a sci-fantasy shooter, debuted its first gameplay trailer during PlayStation’s State of Play event. This game has drawn comparisons to Returnal, featuring a gruff male protagonist, a vibrant shape-shifting wasteland, and a unique force shield that turns enemy attacks into ammunition for powerful weapons.
The trailer showcases intense battles with various enemies, including robotic creatures, skull-themed foes, and colossal adversaries that would challenge even Kratos. The gameplay is reminiscent of Housemarque’s signature style, with a focus on fast-paced combat and dodging energy projectiles.
Similar to Returnal, Saros features a protagonist, Arjun Devraj, voiced by Rajul Kohli, exploring the mysterious colony of Carcosa during a cosmic eclipse that alters the landscape. Players must navigate through shifting environments and face off against formidable foes while utilizing abilities like a protective energy shield and a Second Chance revive mechanic.
Housemarque promises a more forgiving roguelike experience with permanent resources and progression, making each death meaningful and allowing players to “come back stronger.” The game’s narrative and gameplay mechanics aim to provide an engaging and immersive experience for players.
As fans await a PC release date, the anticipation for Saros continues to grow. Players are eager to discover more about the game’s bestiary and lore, building on the success of Returnal’s storytelling and challenging gameplay.
Disclosure: RPS co-founder Alec Meer contributed to the development of Returnal and is the lead writer on Saros.
