Apple and Google have jointly announced a new feature that simplifies switching between Android and iPhone devices. This collaboration aims to enhance the data transfer process between the two platforms, offering users a more seamless experience.
According to a statement from a European Commission spokesperson, this initiative exemplifies the benefits of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) for users and developers. While the European Commission is credited for this partnership, the features will be accessible globally, not limited to the European Union.
The OS portability solution enables users to transfer various data types, such as contacts, calendar events, messages, photos, and more, between iPhone and Android devices effortlessly. This innovation follows the successful rollout of the eSIM transfer solution, simplifying eSIM transfers between iOS and Android devices.
The new switching features will be introduced in an upcoming Android Canary build for Pixel devices and an iOS 26 developer beta. The European Commission emphasizes that these features will benefit third-party app developers by facilitating user retention during platform switches.
