Either PlayStation or Xbox will "struggle mightily" to do well with their next gen console, while Nintendo'll be "the clear winner”, predicts research firm

It’s time to delve into the world of video game boxes once again, and this time, we’re looking towards the future. A research firm has taken a stab at predicting what the next generation of console hardware will entail, with the verdict being that either PlayStation or Xbox will need to secure success by avoiding third place, while Nintendo is expected to hold its own.

According to market research company DFC Intelligence, in their annual market report and forecast, they outline their predictions for the gaming industry up until 2030. As we approach this milestone, it’s a reminder of how time flies.

So, what are the forecasts? Essentially, DFC Intelligence predicts that only one of Sony or Microsoft will dominate this upcoming console generation, with Nintendo likely to thrive alongside the leading platform.

“There isn’t room for more than two major console systems,” DFC stated. “Sony or Microsoft will struggle to secure a strong position in third place – depending on which company gains early momentum.”

The report considers various factors that will influence the competition between Xbox and PlayStation, such as pricing and launch dates. Each company has its strengths, with Sony’s loyal fan base and strong IP portfolio, and Microsoft’s focus on software and distribution models over hardware, thanks to recent acquisitions.

Meanwhile, Nintendo appears poised with its Switch 2, expected to emerge as the clear winner in this new console era, benefiting from early hardware availability and limited competition.

The report also anticipates a positive outlook for the gaming industry, projecting growth resuming next year, boosted by Nintendo’s new hardware and the highly-anticipated GTA 6. This is a welcome shift from the pandemic-related decline experienced in recent years.
