Dreamsettler, Spiritual Sequel to Hypnospace Outlaw, Cancelled

A little over three years since it was announced, Dreamsettler, the spiritual sequel to Hypnospace Outlaw, has been cancelled. Lead developer Jay Tholen shared a video titled “Dreamsettler is canceled” where he explained the reasoning behind the decision. Tholen expressed his apologies in the video description, stating, “This is not a joke, and I’m sorry everyone.”

Tholen explained that Dreamsettler is cancelled due to a mutual decision between him and the publisher. Despite efforts to keep the project going, it was time to stop. He also mentioned that plans are in place to release the existing parts of the game, including the soundtrack by composer The Chowder Man.

The cancellation came at a bad time, as a Patreon campaign to support the project had recently been launched. Tholen revealed that with Dreamsettler, they had a budget and a planned game design, but he admitted to struggling with following a set schedule and design document.

Reflecting on his role in the project, Tholen acknowledged that he may be difficult to work with, leading to the game’s demise. Despite this setback, he expressed hope for the future and thanked supporters for their understanding.

In addition to Dreamsettler, Tholen worked on Slayer X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengeance of the Slayer, receiving mixed reviews. Hypnospace Outlaw, the predecessor, was well-received by critics and players alike.
