Beckie Taylor, a renowned public speaker and the visionary behind Tech Returners, is currently in the process of producing a captivating six-part documentary series titled Breaking the Sound Barrier – Voices Unleashed. This groundbreaking series will shadow the transformative journeys of 10 remarkable women in the technology field as they hone their skills in public speaking.
The documentary will shed light on The Sound Barrier program, an initiative designed to empower participants to build confidence and unleash their voices. Each woman will have the opportunity to showcase their newfound skills by delivering a powerful talk at a public event at the conclusion of the program.
According to Taylor, the documentary will offer a rare glimpse into the dedication, perseverance, and obstacles faced by influential individuals. She emphasized the importance of recognizing the journey taken by these role models, rather than simply focusing on their current success.
Taylor reflected on her own journey, stating, “If I look back at my younger self, I never imagined I would have the courage to speak in front of large audiences or be recognized as a professional public speaker.” She candidly shared her early experiences of trembling knees and gripping onto a lectern, highlighting the transformative growth that has enabled her to confidently engage with audiences today.
In the tech industry, there is a pressing need to provide young individuals, especially girls, with accessible role models to inspire them to pursue careers in technology. Taylor stressed the importance of showcasing real women in tech who can offer relatable insights into an industry brimming with opportunities.
Taylor expressed concern over the lack of diversity in the tech sector and emphasized the urgency of highlighting female talent. She underscored the need to amplify women’s voices, particularly in a time where diversity, equity, and inclusion conversations are sometimes stifled.
With thousands of women leaving tech roles annually due to unmet career expectations or barriers to advancement, Taylor is committed to empowering women to confidently share their perspectives. Through The Sound Barrier program, participants are equipped with public speaking skills to amplify women’s voices and foster inclusivity in the tech industry.
The program is currently self-funded by Taylor, who is actively seeking sponsorship to sustain its impact in the future. The inaugural cohort is set to deliver their talks on November 11, 2025, at an event in Manchester, with the documentary slated for release in 2026.
