One of the more recent trends that I have been enjoying is goofy extraction games. Whether Lethal Company sparked this trend or if it’s just a result of everyone who spent hours playing games like Left 4 Dead 2 as teenagers developing similar interests, I couldn’t say for sure. However, I have grown quite fond of games like Lethal Company, Content Warning, and more recently Repo, despite its questionable key art. Now, a new trailer has revealed Mycopunk, adding to the list of games where you play as a robot that nobody wanted.
As a rejected robot, you are hired by a corporation to venture onto a planet overrun by deadly fungus. This fungus has taken control of the planet, which the corporation claims is a natural disaster, but there may be more to the story (my money’s on the latter). Throughout your journey, you must gather resources, fend off hordes of fungi, and upgrade your robot to prepare for future missions.
Fans of chaotic games like Risk of Rain should find Mycopunk appealing, as the developers have drawn inspiration from the roguelike genre (according to PCGamer).
There is even a space motel where you can relax between missions, complete with a quirky alien named Roachard Cox, who speaks like a southern American horse race commentator. The ability to hang out in this space is what truly draws me to this subgenre of games, and despite Mycopunk’s gritty appearance, I am intrigued by the atmosphere it presents.
Mycopunk does not have a release date yet, but there is a demo available on Steam for those who want to check it out.
