Helix: Descent N Ascent – A Unique Puzzle Adventure
Helix: Descent N Ascent was initially envisioned as a mascot platformer featuring a DNA molecule with Rayman-like floating hands. However, the game has evolved into a slow and atmospheric puzzler, as revealed by the new Steam demo. Players embark on a journey to investigate a fallen civilization while pursuing their doppelganger through a monochrome world filled with intricate terrain puzzles.
The game’s art style draws inspiration from various sources, including 1980s black-and-white indie comics, 1990s manga, and 1970s Franco-Belgian comics. The gameplay involves acquiring paranormal powers, such as telekinesis, to manipulate blocks and solve puzzles. Players can also control a drone resembling their head and engage in mini-games like a tribute to Donkey Kong.
While the initial puzzles may not be overly challenging, the Steam page promises escalating complexity with 25 distinctive ways to play across three levels. The interconnected single screen rooms form a larger maze reminiscent of Amanita’s games, offering a sense of mystique and exploration. Helix is set to release later this year, offering a unique blend of puzzle-solving and atmospheric storytelling.
