Welcome back to the 90s! Well, not really, but two iconic shooters from that era have made a comeback in a special bundle with some exciting new features. Heretic + Hexen is now available for all the nostalgic gamers out there.
This surprise re-release was announced during QuakeCon, with Nightdive Studios and id Software joining forces to breathe new life into these classic shooters, following their successful revamp of Doom and Doom 2 last year.
Unveiled by id’s Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin at QuakeCon, the Heretic + Hexen bundle includes Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel. Additionally, two new chapters have been added exclusively for this re-release: Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandier.
If you already own the original versions of any of these games, you will receive a free upgrade to the new bundle while keeping access to the previous versions, ensuring a seamless transition.

Developer Matthew Tropiano shared insights on the creation of the new chapters in an interview, stating, \”There were level designers (including myself) that wanted to work on something new for Heretic and Hexen. Kaiser (Sam Villareal) led the Heretic episode, while I took charge of the Hexen episode. We collaborated with community members to create new maps and artwork, staying true to the original vision of the games.\”
In addition to the new chapters, the re-release features in-game support for mods, local and online multiplayer for up to 16 players with crossplay, a remixed soundtrack by composer Andrew Hulshult, performance enhancements for 4K resolution and 120 FPS, and a vault showcasing classic concept art.
PC gamers can grab Heretic + Hexen for £13.49/$14.99 on Steam or GOG.com, with availability on Xbox Game Pass as well. Whether you’re a fan of Hexen or new to Heretic, this bundle offers a nostalgic trip back to the golden era of shooters. So, dive in and enjoy the magic of turning enemies into chickens with a magical egg!
