Can business software empower rather than control workers?

Acclaim Autism is dedicated to assisting children with autism spectrum disorder, but before they can provide help, they must obtain approval from US health insurers. Founder Jamie Turner explains that this process used to take six months, with 80% of applications being initially rejected. Each insurer has different requirements, with one commercial insurer demanding original diagnosis documents, some of which may be over a decade old for teenagers, as well as recent ones.

To streamline this process, Acclaim Autism implemented process management software from Appian in collaboration with Ignyte Group. This software has significantly improved their approval rate to 95%, with a much quicker turnaround time of less than a month. Through the use of artificial intelligence (AI), the software scans diagnosis documents to extract crucial information and predicts what each insurer will need for approval based on past rejections.

Additionally, the software has empowered Acclaim Autism’s 175 staff members by allowing them more flexibility in completing applications. Previously, they were constrained by a linear process in a Salesforce CRM system. However, by breaking down the application process into smaller tasks, staff can now adapt to each family’s unique situation and progress through the process more efficiently.

This shift towards increased task discretion aligns with a broader trend identified in the UK’s Skills and Employment Survey, which shows a decline in worker autonomy over the years. While technology can play a role in either enhancing or diminishing task discretion, it ultimately comes down to how managers utilize these tools. Professor Alan Felstead emphasizes the importance of employee involvement in shaping technology projects, as this can lead to higher motivation, well-being, and productivity.
