After receiving a wave of negative feedback and noticing a decline in player numbers, Bungie has acknowledged that they made some missteps with Destiny 2. In their latest This Week at Bungie (TWAB) update, they addressed the community’s concerns.
“With the release of Edge of Fate, we introduced a new direction for Destiny 2, focusing on a deeper pursuit of Power and progression through various activities. However, it became evident quickly that this approach was not resonating with our player base,” Bungie stated.
“Even if our execution had been flawless, which it was not, we understand that simply grinding for Power is not the same as earning meaningful achievements. Climbing through insignificant tiers to get to the gear you desire is not fulfilling. The Portal concept also detracted from the sense of exploration and place that defines Destiny. These lessons have been taken to heart by our team over the past few months.”
“From update 9.0.0 to 9.1.5, our primary focus has been on responding to player feedback by improving rewards, giving players more agency in activity selection, and removing barriers to playing with friends.”

The criticism of the Portal and power grind stemmed from the repetitive nature of certain activities required to increase power levels before receiving desirable weapon drops. This led to other activities, like Dares of Eternity, becoming irrelevant due to matchmaking issues.
Updates 9.5.0 (December 2) and 9.5.0.1 (December 9) will introduce significant changes to the game:
- Enhanced Power progression in Expansion content.
- Seasonal Power and Featured Gear will carry over between Seasons.
- Increased Vault capacity to ease collection management.
