Bungie and PlayStation are working on a MOBA inspired by Nintendo's Smash Bros, claims report

Reports suggest that Bungie, the creators of Destiny, were working on a team-based MOBA game inspired by Nintendo’s Smash Bros series, codenamed Gummy Bears. However, the project has now been passed on to a newly founded PlayStation studio with 40 Bungie developers continuing to work on it.

According to sources from The Game Post, the new Sony studio was established last year as part of Bungie’s major restructuring. With 155 team members, the studio was initially working on an untitled action game set in a science-fantasy universe.

Gummy Bears is described as a vibrant, colorful, lo-fi, and cozy game designed for a younger audience. It has been in development for three years and features a percentage-based damage system similar to Smash Bros, where blows push characters further back instead of traditional health bars.

The game includes three class types – support, attack, and defense – as well as various modes and the option to socialize with others between matches. There are implications of a hub environment for players to interact in. However, not everyone is excited about this feature.

Bungie is known for projects like the Destiny series and a reboot of Marathon, a PvP extraction shooter. While opinions on the new Marathon vary, there is optimism for Bungie to create a groundbreaking extraction shooter. Personally, I would prefer a Bungie version of Smash Bros, given their history with innovative gameplay elements like the Gravity Hammer.
