Blackmagic Design Unveils URSA Cine Immersive Camera for Apple Immersive Video

Blackmagic Design has announced the launch of its new URSA Cine Immersive camera, specifically designed to capture 8K VR180 footage for the Apple Immersive Video format. Priced at $30,000, the camera is now available for pre-order, with shipping set for Q1 2025. A forthcoming update to DaVinci Resolve Studio will introduce editing tools tailored for Apple Immersive Video, including support for calibration data from the camera.

Apple Immersive Video is a 180° 3D video format designed for playback on Apple Vision Pro. Previous iterations of Blackmagic’s URSA Cine Immersive were likely used to film the current Apple Immersive Video content on the headset.

With pre-orders now open for $30,000, the URSA Cine Immersive boasts a pair of 180° stereo lenses, each capturing 59MP (8,160 x 7,200) with 16 stops of dynamic range. The camera can record up to 90 FPS in Blackmagic RAW format, embedding calibration data unique to each camera for precise and stable footage during editing.

The upcoming update to DaVinci Resolve Studio will introduce features specific to editing footage from the URSA Cine Immersive, including an Immersive Video Viewer for pan, tilt, and roll functions, seamless transitions for Apple Vision Pro, and export presets for streamlined delivery to Apple Vision Pro-ready packages.

Blackmagic and Apple aim to simplify the process of capturing and releasing content in the Apple Immersive Video format with the release of the URSA Cine Immersive camera and enhanced editing workflow. It remains to be seen whether the camera and editing software will be compatible with capturing VR180 footage for playback on other platforms and headsets, or if there are proprietary elements in the Apple Immersive Video format that may hinder multi-platform compatibility.
