Beware! Beware! The Witcher 4 beta scams!

Listen to the tolling of the village bell! Witness the watchfires ablaze on the parapet! CD Projekt has issued a warning regarding Witcher 4 beta scams. It seems that some individuals have been receiving invitations to playtest the new Witcher game, despite CD Projekt stating that the RPG sequel will not be released before 2027. If you sign up for anything at this moment, the only thing you’ll be testing is how quickly you can change all your usernames and passwords.

“We have recently received reports from community members about being invited to a beta test of The Witcher 4 – this is a scam!” cries a social media post, reminiscent of a cleric at the chapel door guiding the villagers inside. “We are taking necessary steps to remove this fraudulent messaging. If you receive any invites or come across news of one, please report the scam using the available tools in your email client or social media platform.”

“Remember: true monster slayers do not fall for scams,” the post emphasizes, just in case the mention of email clients had shattered your illusion of being a seasoned warrior with a silver sword. “They see through them and eliminate them!”

Without delving too deeply into the lore, CD Projekt, I believe that characterization undermines The Witcher’s immersive storytelling. If this were a quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Geralt might uncover that the scammers are actually orphaned children who were mistreated by the villagers for having hairy toes. He would then face a moral dilemma of whether to confront the scammers, the villagers, or blow up Megaton. Following that, he would engage in some romantic encounters with a sorceress and play a game of Gwent. My recollection of The Witcher 3 may be a bit rusty.

“If we ever conduct beta tests in the future, you will be the first to know through our official social media and websites,” CD Projekt assures. In the meantime, you can revisit Ed Thorn’s (RPS in peace) enthusiastic plea for a horse that can double-jump.
