Become a wolfgirl with a fliphone and explore brutalist, liminal dreamscapes in nophenia

Exploring the World of Nophenia: A Unique Walking Sim Experience

I’ve always had a soft spot for walking sims, even though they may not be as popular as they once were. Games like Gone Home, Dear Esther, and The Stanley Parable captured my attention in the early days of indie gaming. But now, with the rise of mechanics-driven genres like roguelikes, walking sims seem to have taken a back seat. However, when a game like nophenia comes along – a walking sim where you play as a wolfgirl with a flip phone exploring dream worlds – I can’t help but be intrigued.

Nophenia’s Steam page is refreshingly simple and bold. The description states, “There is… no game. You walk around and explore brutalist but dream-like environments.” It also mentions dedicated buttons for sitting and howling because “wolfgirls are super cool.” The controls are listed, adding to the mystery surrounding the game.

Fortunately, there’s a demo available to try out. It’s as straightforward as described – you can walk, run, jump, and immerse yourself in the surreal environments. The solitude in these dream worlds is palpable, with only fleeting glimpses of other beings. The sense of isolation is accentuated by the inability to return to previous dreams, forcing you to move forward, both literally and metaphorically.

I particularly enjoy the flip phone pause menu in the demo. It conveys a longing for tranquility and escape from the digital noise. Starting in a cluttered bedroom with a boarded-up door, illuminated by the glow of a computer screen, sets the tone for this introspective experience. The photo mode, reminiscent of a nostalgic flip phone camera, adds to the overall aesthetic.

Nophenia serves as a compelling example of the value of walking sims. They encourage players to slow down, contemplate, and immerse themselves in the experience. This thematic depth is evident in nophenia’s design and gameplay.

I eagerly anticipate exploring more of nophenia’s dreams when it launches in early 2026. In the meantime, you can add it to your Steam wishlist here.
