Soul Assembly Announces Team Layoffs for Upcoming Projects
Soul Assembly, the studio known for the popular Drop Dead VR shooter franchise, has revealed that it will be reducing its team by 15%. The UK-based developer and publisher stated that this decision was necessary to align the studio with the requirements of their upcoming projects.
The announcement comes after reports surfaced of affected developers posting ‘Open to Work’ banners on LinkedIn. Senior character artist Jonathan Pearmin shared on LinkedIn that he has been made redundant effective immediately.
Soul Assembly spun out of Pixel Toys’ XR division in 2022, and has since released titles such as Drop Dead: The Cabin (2023) and Soul Spire (2024). The studio also partnered with Ubisoft for Just Dance VR: Welcome to Dancity (2024).
This news follows a trend of layoffs in the gaming industry, with UK-based studios like nDreams and XR Games also experiencing staff reductions. The industry as a whole has seen layoffs and studio closures, impacting companies like Epic Games, Xbox Game Studios, and Sony.
Other studios affected by economic challenges include Canada-based Archiact, social VR platform VRChat, and Meta’s closure of Ready at Dawn. The gaming industry continues to navigate through a challenging time as companies adjust to market demands.
