Apple TV Adds Netflix’s F1 Drive to Survive in US Deal

Apple wasted no time in seizing the opportunity following the success of its hit movie, F1: The Movie, last summer. The tech giant quickly secured a deal to stream F1 races, aiming to become the go-to destination for F1 fans in the US. In a surprising move, Apple has teamed up with Netflix to bring the eighth season of Drive to Survive to Apple TV.

While Apple’s movie attracted new audiences to Formula 1, Netflix also played a crucial role in boosting interest in the sport through its documentary series. Many expected Netflix to be a contender for the US streaming rights, but the bidding came down to Apple and ESPN. Ultimately, Apple outbid ESPN to secure the rights, indicating its strong commitment to bringing live sports to Apple TV.

Apple’s partnership with Netflix may seem unusual, given their rivalry in the streaming space. However, the collaboration underscores the importance of Formula 1 in bringing the two companies together. Season 8 of Drive to Survive will be available on both Netflix and Apple TV, with Apple exclusively streaming the new season in the US.

The Grand Prix Trade-Off

While Apple TV will showcase the excitement of the 2025 FIA Formula One World Championship with Drive to Survive, Netflix will live stream the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix to US viewers. This unique arrangement highlights the evolving landscape of streaming services and the growing popularity of Formula 1 among younger audiences.

Apple’s CEO Stefano Domenicali sees the partnership as a strategic move to expand Formula 1’s reach in the US market. The five-year deal between Apple and F1 includes access to F1 TV Premium, signaling a new era for streaming sports content. Domenicali believes that Apple’s innovative approach will help attract a younger demographic to Formula 1.

Apple will utilize its tools and platforms, including Apple TV, to enhance the viewing experience for F1 fans. By collaborating with Apple, F1 aims to engage a wider audience and deliver compelling content.

As Apple and F1 continue to explore new opportunities, the partnership holds promise for the future of sports streaming. Whether the deal will extend to other countries remains uncertain, but the success in the US market could pave the way for further collaboration between Apple and Formula 1.
