Apple is rolling out system updates for older iPhones and iPads that are no longer supported by the latest versions of iOS and iPadOS. Here are the details.
Apple still releasing updates for devices dating back to 2015
As spotted by Aaron Perris, Apple is rolling out:
- iOS 16.7.15
- iOS 15.8.7
- iPadOS 16.7.15
- iPadOS 15.8.7
The release notes don’t reveal much, sticking to the standard message saying: “This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for your iPhone.”
Devices for which the update is available include iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPad (5th generation), iPad Pro (9.7-inch), iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (1st generation), and iPad mini 4.
While it’s always important to keep devices up to date, that’s especially true for older hardware when Apple releases a new update, as it may include important security fixes.
Just recently, Google and iVerify published a report on hacking tools used to break into iPhones running iOS 13 through iOS 17.2.1. While it’s not yet clear whether today’s updates are related to the vulnerabilities mentioned in that report, it is still worth checking that your device is running the latest available version.
Update: Apple has confirmed that today’s updates address the Coruna exploit.
