Apple has introduced the first public Background Security Improvement for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with four versions of the release available.
Background Security Improvement for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS
Today’s release includes the following versions:
- iOS 26.3.1 (a)
- iPadOS 26.3.1 (a)
- macOS 26.3.1 (a)
- macOS 26.3.2 (a)
The two macOS releases may be attributed to the new MacBook Neo running a newer version of macOS 26 compared to other Macs on macOS Tahoe.
What’s included in today’s release
Apple’s latest Background Security Improvement is described as a WebKit patch:
Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may bypass Same Origin Policy
Description: A cross-origin issue in the Navigation API was addressed with improved input validation.
Prior to this public release, Apple issued several sample Background Security Improvement updates for testing purposes.
Apple states that the system can provide “lightweight security releases for components such as the Safari browser, WebKit framework stack, and other system libraries, benefiting from smaller, continuous security patches in between software updates.”
