Apple is gearing up to launch iOS 17.4 to the public next week, featuring a significant update for EU users that allows third-party app stores and more. Earlier this year, it was announced that Apple would be opening up iOS to third-party app stores in the EU for the first time due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This move, along with a new commission structure and third-party default web browsers, represents a major shift in Apple’s approach.
Prior to the official launch of iOS 17.4 with these updates in the EU, Apple has published a 60-page whitepaper outlining the upcoming changes. The whitepaper emphasizes Apple’s dedication to ensuring security and privacy for users, stating that these safeguards will help maintain a secure and privacy-protecting iPhone experience for EU users.
These safeguards will help keep EU users’ iPhone experience as secure, privacy-protecting, and safe as possible—although not to the same degree as in the rest of the world.
Apple highlights its commitment to creating products that enrich users’ lives globally, with a strong emphasis on security, privacy, and safety features. To comply with the DMA’s requirements, Apple has developed over 600 new APIs and developer tools.
