Apple Adds visionOS Support to Godot Game Engine

Apple has made a surprising move by directly integrating support for its visionOS platform into the Godot open-source game engine. This decision expands the toolkit available to developers looking to create content for the headset.

Similar to popular engines like Unity and Unreal, Godot offers a comprehensive set of development tools that streamline the process of building real-time games and applications. What sets Godot apart is its open-source nature, allowing developers to utilize the engine and distribute their creations free of charge. Additionally, the open-source aspect enables developers to contribute enhancements and fixes to benefit the entire community.

Apple’s decision to incorporate visionOS support into Godot marks a significant step for the company. This integration will enable developers to create and distribute Vision Pro content using the engine.

Apple software engineer Ricardo Sanchez-Saez has revealed the company’s plans to add visionOS support to Godot as an open-source initiative. The implementation will consist of two main components: the first phase will enable games developed with Godot to run in flat windows on visionOS, while the second phase will introduce support for building fully immersive visionOS applications with the engine.

Given the open-source nature of the process, it will take some time for Apple’s contributions to be incorporated into the production version of Godot, with no specific timeline for completion provided.

Godot now stands alongside Unity, Unreal Engine, X-code, and Reality Composer Pro as a tool for developers to create applications for Vision Pro. Furthermore, Godot can be utilized to develop apps for various VR platforms, including Quest and PC VR.
