Anthropic reportedly nears $170B valuation with potential $5B round

Dario Amodei, co-founder and chief executive officer of Anthropi.

Anthropic is currently in discussions to secure funding in the range of $3 billion to $5 billion, which would place the large language model developer’s valuation at $170 billion, as reported by Bloomberg.

Leading this funding round is Iconiq Capital, with the potential for a second major investor to join. Anthropic has also been engaged in talks with Qatar Investment Authority and GIC, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, according to sources.

If the deal is finalized, it would represent a significant increase in Anthropic’s valuation, which stood at $61.5 billion following a $3.5 billion funding round earlier this year led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. Other notable participants in the startup’s previous round included Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures.

Despite Anthropic’s commitment to developing AI models with safety in mind, CEO Dario Amodei recently expressed concerns in a leaked memo to employees, as reported by Wired, about accepting funding from sovereign wealth funds associated with authoritarian regimes.

In order to meet the substantial financial demands of AI model development, Anthropic has found it necessary to seek investment from Middle Eastern sources.

“Unfortunately, I believe that maintaining a strict principle of ‘No bad person should ever benefit from our success’ presents significant challenges in running a business,” Amodei acknowledged in the leaked memo.

Anthropic has not yet issued a public statement regarding these recent developments.
