The team behind Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has shown their expertise in making a successful video game movie, sparking interest in a potential Zelda movie adaptation.
Despite the ups and downs of the Sonic franchise, the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie managed to effectively adapt the quirky storyline from Sonic Adventure 2, defying expectations. This success has raised hopes that the team could handle other game-to-film adaptations well. In an interview with IGN, the film’s writers, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, expressed interest in adapting various games, including another Sega title.
“We’ve talked about Golden Axe,” Casey mentioned. “Golden Axe was another popular Genesis multiplayer game.” Miller suggested A Boy and His Blob, while Casey added a more unconventional choice, “the 7-Up game about the dot having a platforming adventure,” referring to Cool Spot, a platformer featuring the red dot from the 7-Up Logo. However, their most intriguing suggestion revolved around a Zelda adaptation.
“I think another easy one I think we can answer because the movie’s already happening and we’re already not doing it would be a Zelda,” shared Miller. “I remember always when we played Wind Waker, we were always like, man, it would probably be weird if they made a Zelda movie to start with Wind Waker versus the more classic Hyrule. But we both loved Wind Waker and it’s so cinematic. Yeah. So after they make this Zelda movie, I guess we’re putting it out there in the world, maybe we can do a Wind Waker spin-off.”
The choice of Wind Waker for an adaptation is intriguing, considering its divisive reception among Zelda fans initially due to its cel-shaded graphics. Despite this, the game’s visual style is now appreciated, making it a potentially exciting source material for a film. While Nintendo is working on a live-action adaptation, it’s unlikely to focus on Wind Waker, raising curiosity about the direction it will take.
Wind Waker could offer a fresh and enjoyable take on the Zelda universe, adding a unique perspective to the franchise. Let’s hope for a successful adaptation that does justice to the beloved game.
