A pivotal online hub for ROM hacks goes news-only after two decades

Nightcrawler, the creator and operator of ROMhacking.net, recently announced that the longstanding online hub for community-made alterations to classic games will no longer accept submissions. Moving forward, the site will only feature news updates.

According to Nightcrawler, the site’s extensive collection can now be accessed on The Internet Archive, conveniently consolidated into a single 11.7GB zip file containing two decades’ worth of hacks and other files. While the forum will remain active and downloads accessible for the time being, the site itself is now in read-only mode.

Nightcrawler cited the site’s overwhelming demand, perpetual queues, and legal challenges as reasons for its gradual shutdown. He also accused a certain group of individuals who had offered to take over site management of doxxing him and orchestrating a coup to oust him. However, a member of this group refuted these claims in a series of posts on X.

Overall, ROMhacking.net’s transition marks the end of an era in the classic gaming community. The site’s legacy will live on through its archived content, ensuring that the creativity and passion of its contributors are preserved for future generations.
