A new report reveals Kojima was asked to make a Matrix game, which he denies

Back in the last century, there were whispers of Hideo Kojima potentially developing a video game based on The Matrix film. However, Shiny Entertainment ended up securing the license and releasing two successful games – Enter the Matrix and The Path of Neo. I have fond memories of spending hours playing Enter The Matrix during one Christmas season.

In a recent interview, Christopher Bergstresser, a former VP at Konami Digital Entertainment, disclosed that the Wachowskis, creators of The Matrix, were keen on having Kojima work on a Matrix game. However, Konami’s executive, Kasumi Kitaue, bluntly declined the offer, citing other priorities like Metal Gear Solid 2.

UPDATE: Kojima refuted claims of a meeting with the Wachowskis for a Matrix project. He clarified on Twitter:

“I was surprised to hear about the supposed ‘Matrix game project offer’ from the Wachowskis in 1999. Throughout our 26-year friendship, such a conversation never occurred. We exchanged emails and met a few times during their Japan visit for The Matrix promotion.”

“I was occupied with MGS2 at the time, making it challenging to accept any new projects. Nonetheless, had I been informed, we might have worked something out.”

In 2000, Kojima discussed parallels between his work and The Matrix with the Wachowskis. He admired their film and acknowledged similarities in their creative ideas. This connection is evident in his later game, Death Stranding, which explores themes akin to The Matrix.

As Kojima ventures into new projects like OD for Microsoft, fans speculate on potential collaborations with renowned directors like the Wachowskis. Their expertise could enhance the gaming experience, much like their impact on the film industry.
