Following the discontinuation of the 27-inch iMac and iMac Pro by Apple in 2022, there has been little mention of any plans to revive or replace them. However, it seems that Apple has not completely abandoned the idea of a large-screen all-in-one desktop. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his PowerOn newsletter, Apple may eventually focus on releasing a super-sized desktop for the professional market.
While there were initial hopes for a larger variant of the iMac when Apple introduced the M1 refresh, those hopes have not materialized so far. The company is currently busy with a refresh for the Mac Studio Display, delaying any potential launch of a new large-screen iMac.
As for a successor to the ProDisplay XDR, Apple is not in a rush to launch one, given its niche market. Speculation about a 27-inch or 32-inch iMac making a comeback has been ongoing, with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggesting a possible release in 2024 or 2025 with a mini-LED display upgrade.
Apple’s upcoming hardware lineup includes a refresh of the MacBook Air with M4 silicon, followed by the transition to M5 silicon in the MacBook Pro later this year. Updated Mac Pro and Mac Studio models are also expected, along with an M5-powered iPad Pro next year.
