SpaceX accused of dumping mercury into Texas waters for years

Reports from CNBC reveal that SpaceX’s Starship launches at their Starbase facility near Boca Chica, Texas, have been causing contamination of local bodies of water with mercury for several years. This news comes after internal documents and communications between local Texas regulators and the Environmental Protection Agency were cited in an exclusive report on August 12.

Despite SpaceX’s recent successful fourth Starship test launch in June, concerns continue to rise about the impact of the world’s largest and most powerful rocket on the surrounding Texas communities, wildlife, and ecosystems. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) have expressed frustration after repeated warnings and unheeded requests.

The issues originated from a complaint filed with the TCEQ over a year ago, citing 14 incidents related to environmental impacts from the facility’s deluge system discharging water without authorization. These water deluge systems are crucial for mitigating the intense heat, energy, and sound produced during rocket launches, such as SpaceX’s Starship with its 33 methane- and liquid-oxygen fueled Raptor engines.

SpaceX faced regulatory violations for bypassing permit processes and failing to provide wastewater treatment plans. Despite warnings from the EPA, SpaceX proceeded with launches, causing concern among local residents about the impact on the environment and their health.

The ongoing issues surrounding Starship launches have led to postponed environmental impact assessment meetings by the FAA, affecting SpaceX’s plans for future test launches at their Texas spaceport. The potential impact on SpaceX’s timeline for missions, including ferrying NASA’s Artemis 3 mission astronauts to the moon, remains uncertain.

As SpaceX aims for a fully reusable Starship system to achieve CEO Elon Musk’s goal of human transportation to Mars, concerns persist about the environmental and safety implications of their rocket launches. The future of Starship’s test launches and missions, including NASA collaborations, may be influenced by the ongoing environmental challenges faced by SpaceX.

This developing story highlights the importance of balancing technological advancements in space exploration with environmental conservation and community well-being.
