Android Auto has been undergoing continuous redesigns since its inception in 2015 to meet user expectations. However, there hasn’t been a major UI overhaul since 2019. Google has been working on a significant update codenamed “Coolwalk,” which was first identified in September 2021. New images and information now shed light on the progress of development. It’s evident that the platform now features elements reminiscent of Apple CarPlay, such as a dashboard design with a unique take in the form of widgets.
Italian Android website AndroidWorld recently dissected Android Auto version 7.3 to uncover the new features in action. The upcoming major update is expected to introduce a hamburger-style menu to accommodate features like weather and music player.
The primary interface now offers more space, as the top status bar has been merged into the bottom dock. The status bar and the dedicated button to activate the side panel have been removed. Instead, users can now long-press the home button to access retractable widgets.
When exiting the navigation map view, it shifts to the left side to keep the navigation interface persistent while driving. AndroidWorld and Reddit user u/RegionRat91 (via Mishaal Rahman) also mentioned the potential introduction of screen mirroring to the Android Auto dashboard using Google Cast. Code lines such as “MirroringApp” and “beta” suggest that users may be able to mirror their car’s screen content onto the Android Auto app.
Another notable feature in the pipeline for Android Auto is the ability to reject calls and send SMS messages. Google is currently testing this feature, which includes a “Send SMS” button for quick text responses and the option to dictate messages using Google Assistant.
The app is also set to receive improved AI for notification management. For instance, it will be smart enough to avoid recommending streaming videos while the user is driving. Although there is no official release date for the update, it is expected to be unveiled at the upcoming Google I/O event in a few months.
