Plex Triples Lifetime Pass Price to $750

For those who are fans of Plex, now might be the last opportunity to secure a lifetime pass at a reasonable price. Plex recently announced that they are increasing the price of a Lifetime Plex Pass to $750, but they are giving customers a few weeks to purchase it at the current price before the hike goes into effect.

The significant price increase has left many wondering about Plex’s reasoning behind it. This latest raise triples the price of the lifetime pass, which is currently priced at $250. It’s worth noting that just a year ago, Plex doubled the price. In less than 18 months, the cost of perpetual access to Plex will have gone up by nearly 500%.

One possible explanation for the price hike is to push customers towards recurring subscriptions, which provide a more stable revenue stream for the company. Plex acknowledges this in their announcement, stating that while they have considered discontinuing the Lifetime Plex Pass in the past, they understand its value to the community.

“We’ve considered eliminating the Lifetime Plex Pass in the past, given that recurring subscriptions help us sustain long-term development, but we know it’s still a valuable option for many in our community. So instead of retiring it, we’re keeping it available at a price that reflects the real, ongoing value of the software we’re committed to building and maintaining for years to come.”

While Plex is not changing its subscription prices, which remain at $7 per month or $70 per year, they have been exploring other revenue streams in recent years. This includes ventures into streaming services such as Plex News & Podcasts, ad-supported video-on-demand, and free ad-supported streaming TV with live channels.

Despite the price increase, existing Plex Pass holders will not see any changes to their service. For those interested in purchasing a Lifetime Plex Pass at the current price of $250, the offer is available until July 1, 2026. This may be a worthwhile investment for dedicated Plex users who see the value in the service.
