OpenAI Considering Lawsuit Against Apple Over Siri Integration

Apple unveiled its first AI features in June 2024, introducing a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. While Apple Intelligence provided on-device models for Writing Tools, Image Playground, and Siri, users could also access ChatGPT for more advanced queries.

However, Siri often fell short, lacking the personalized touch that Apple had promised. OpenAI’s ChatGPT filled this gap, offering a solution for handling “world knowledge” until Siri was ready.

Despite the integration of ChatGPT in iOS 18.2, Siri’s performance declined, leading to dissatisfaction among users. Apple had initially envisioned ChatGPT as the first of many AI extensions but struggled to secure partnerships with other tech giants like Google or Anthropic.

As tensions grew, OpenAI expressed disappointment with the partnership, citing a lack of subscriber growth and prominent placement within Apple’s ecosystem. Legal action is now being considered by OpenAI, signaling a shift in their once-amicable relationship with Apple.

The ‘Goodwill’ Deal That Went Sour

In 2024, Apple and OpenAI appeared optimistic about their collaboration, with Apple emphasizing the value of promoting OpenAI’s technology to millions of devices. However, two years later, OpenAI is exploring legal options due to unmet expectations.

Apple’s integration of ChatGPT into Image Playground lacked significant branding, leading to OpenAI’s dissatisfaction with the partnership. OpenAI felt that Apple had not made sufficient efforts to leverage the collaboration.

When Partners Become Rivals

The once-promising relationship between Apple and OpenAI soured as OpenAI expanded into hardware and health services, encroaching on Apple’s territory. Disagreements arose over user privacy and revenue sharing, causing further strain on the partnership.

While OpenAI saw a surge in users, it questioned Apple’s role in driving subscription growth. The future of their collaboration remains uncertain, with OpenAI contemplating its next steps amidst ongoing legal challenges and strained relations with Apple.
