BYD’s latest EV costs just over $10,000, goes 250 miles, and packs a LiDAR, too

BYD has officially introduced the 2026 Seagull, known internationally as the Dolphin Mini or Dolphin Surf, and the pricing is certainly noteworthy.

The updated compact EV starts at 69,900 yuan in China, approximately $10,300, and goes up to 85,900 yuan, around $12,600. It made its debut at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show before hitting the market this week.

2026 BYD Seagull launched with prices ranging from 69.9 to 97.9k RMB. The top 2 price versions come with Lidar + DiPilot-300 & DiLink-150 for the latest smart car tech sensors and computing.

What do buyers actually get for their money?

The standout addition this year is the optional “God’s Eye B” intelligent driving package, the DiPilot 300 system, which includes a LiDAR sensor in the subcompact city car, raising the price to between $13,400 and $14,400.

This system offers city-level autopilot navigation, along with traffic light recognition and roundabout handling. This provides semi-autonomous driving capabilities in a price range where most US car buyers are considering used Toyotas or three-year-old Chevys.

The BYD variant with longer range features a 38.88 kWh battery pack, delivering up to 252 miles of CLTC-certified range. The base variants use a 30.08 kWh battery pack offering up to 190 miles of claimed range.

BYD’s subcompact city car offers impressive features

Designed for city driving, the new BYD EV is equipped with a 55 kW motor producing 135 Nm of torque, ideal for urban environments.

The interior boasts a 12.8-inch central touchscreen display for navigation and 3D vehicle controls. Optional extras include 50W wireless charging, heated front seats, and a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.

In my opinion, the 2026 update of the Seagull is more than just a refresh. By incorporating LiDAR technology into the sub-$15,000 range, BYD is making advanced driver assistance features accessible at a price point where they were previously unimaginable.
