Atari acquires Wizardry IP from Drecom

Atari Acquires Rights to First Five Wizardry Games

Atari has recently announced the acquisition of the rights to the first five Wizardry games and the main Wizardry IP from owner Drecom.

The five games included in this acquisition are: Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (1981), Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds (1982), Wizardry III: Legacy of Llylgamyn (1983), Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna (1987), and Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom (1988).

Atari’s plans for the Original Wizardry and The Llylgamyn Saga games involve reintroducing them to the market through expanded digital and physical distribution, remasters, collections, and new releases.

The publisher also intends to celebrate this acquisition with merchandise, card and board games, books and comics, and TV and film projects, aiming to build an entertainment franchise based on the Original Wizardry games.

Co-creator of the Wizardry franchise, Robert Woodhead, expressed excitement about Atari’s efforts to bring back these classic games to new audiences. Atari CEO and chairman Wade Rosen also emphasized the significance of republishing and remastering these influential RPG games.

Previously, Atari subsidiary Digital Eclipse released a remake of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, which was licensed under Drecom at the time.

It’s worth noting that Drecom will retain Wizardry titles 6, 7, and 8, which belong to a different fictional universe.
