United App Adds TSA Wait Times Pilot for Major US Hubs

United Airlines stands out from other airlines for its quick adoption of new Apple device features. In 2024, it was one of the first airlines to support Apple’s AirTag lost luggage tracking system. United took it a step further by integrating AirTag functionality into its iPhone app, allowing passengers to easily share the location of a lost bag with United Airlines staff. The airline also promptly added support for new iOS 26 boarding passes and offers Apple TV shows on its in-flight entertainment systems.

Recently, United Airlines launched a significant update, introducing a TSA tracker feature. Along with this new feature, the airline is showcasing its suite of tools, including its deep integration of Apple’s “Share Item Location” feature for AirTags.

Many iPhone users have been using AirTags in their checked bags since 2021, helping them locate lost luggage in various situations. Previously, passengers had to track their own luggage using the Find My app and then inform airline customer service. However, in late 2024, Apple collaborated with airlines to streamline the process of sharing AirTag locations. United Airlines has fully integrated this feature into its app, allowing users to paste AirTag links in the delayed baggage report.

While the focus is on the new TSA tracker, United Airlines emphasizes how these bag tracking enhancements have become essential in its travel ecosystem, alongside the new security line data.

In addition to the TSA wait time feature, United’s app now provides turn-by-turn directions to gates, estimated walking times, and information on holding planes for travelers with tight connections between flights.

United’s mobile app now offers estimated TSA security wait times, a unique service among major U.S. airlines. Through a pilot program, travelers receive regular updates on security wait times, helping them plan their journeys confidently.

This timely addition is crucial, especially during the current partial US government shutdown, which has impacted checkpoint staffing. United Airlines recognizes the importance of keeping travelers informed and prepared for potential delays at security checkpoints.

The security wait times feature initially covers United’s US hub airports in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington DC, providing estimated times for standard and TSA PreCheck lanes.

Jason Birnbaum, United’s Chief Information Officer, acknowledges the dedication of TSA agents and the necessity for travelers to stay informed about security wait times amid the ongoing government shutdown. The airline’s app aims to meet customers’ travel needs by offering essential information for a seamless journey.
