MacBook Slow Charger & Charge Limit

The latest macOS 26.4 updates may seem light on new features at first glance, but there’s more to them than meets the eye. While the release notes mentioned new emoji and the usual bug fixes, there’s a hidden gem that many users may have overlooked – the Charge Limit feature.

The Charge Limit, originally introduced on the iPhone 15, allows MacBook users to set a maximum charge level for their device. This feature helps prolong the overall life of the battery by avoiding unnecessary wear caused by leaving the battery at full capacity for extended periods. To access the Charge Limit, navigate to the System Settings app, select “Battery,” and click on the “i” next to the “Charging” option. From there, you can use a slider to set a charge limit percentage between 80 and 100 in five-percent increments.

Unlike Optimized Battery Charging, which delays charging when connected to power for a long time, the Charge Limit enforces a hard cap on the battery charge level. Apple notes that the MacBook may occasionally charge to 100% to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates.

In addition to the Charge Limit, macOS 26.4 also introduces Slow Charger warnings, borrowed from iOS 18. This feature notifies users when their MacBook is connected to a low-power charger, ensuring that the device receives adequate power for efficient charging.

Apple provides a list of recommended power adapters for each MacBook model, specifying the minimum power requirements. For example:

  1. 16-inch MacBook Pro: 140W
  2. 14-inch MacBook Pro: 67W
  3. MacBook Air: 30W
  4. MacBook Neo: 20W

Using a lower-wattage adapter may result in slower charging, as the MacBook may not receive enough power to charge optimally. The Slow Charger warning alerts users to this situation, indicating when the device is connected to a charger providing insufficient power.

It’s important to note that using a higher-wattage adapter is safe, as the MacBook only draws the power it requires. This feature is particularly beneficial for MacBook users in Europe, where chargers are no longer included in the box due to EU regulations. Having the right power adapter ensures efficient charging and prolongs the battery’s lifespan.

Overall, the macOS 26.4 updates bring valuable power-related features to MacBook users, enhancing the charging experience and optimizing battery health.
