Sony to retire the PSN branding

Sony to Drop PSN Branding and Name

An email obtained by Insider Gaming has revealed that Sony is planning to discontinue the use of the PlayStation Network (PSN) branding. While PSN will still be operational, it will be known by a different name.

The email from Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) stated, “We’d like to inform you that SIE has strategically decided to phase out the terms ‘PlayStation Network’ and ‘PSN’ to better represent our expanding digital services. The changes are scheduled to be completed by September 2026, with no technical impact on the existing features such as friends, multiplayer, and trophies.”

However, the decision to rebrand the PSN has sparked mixed reactions within the gaming community. With the 20th anniversary of the PSN approaching in November 2026, many gamers find it challenging to let go of a name that has become synonymous with gaming culture.

The email also hints at Sony’s plans for future digital services, possibly related to the upcoming PS6 console. While Sony has limited digital services compared to its competitors, the rebranding strategy aims to align with the company’s evolving digital landscape.

Despite the official name change, it is likely that gamers will continue to refer to the platform as the PSN, reflecting its enduring legacy in the gaming industry.
