Discord concede they mucked up their age verification system rollout, delays it, will still make some of you do it

Earlier this month, Discord announced plans to implement a global age verification system, which was met with mixed reactions from users. The system involved an experiment with an identity detection firm called Persona, supported by Palantir chairman Peter Thiel. However, after receiving backlash, Discord released a statement addressing concerns about the new policy. Despite not offering a direct apology, Discord acknowledged the need for more transparency and detailed how the age verification process would work.

Discord assured users that 90% of them would not need to verify their age, as their internal safety systems could determine the age of most adult users without any additional steps. For the remaining 10%, users would have the option to verify their age without revealing their identity. This could be done through methods such as submitting credit card information or other alternatives.

It was clarified that the test conducted with Persona was limited and that Discord had decided not to continue working with them. Discord emphasized the importance of data privacy and committed to transparency regarding any third-party vendors they collaborate with. Despite these assurances, many users expressed concerns about having to provide sensitive information to use the platform for casual conversations with friends.

In light of the feedback, Discord has postponed the global rollout of the age verification system to the latter half of 2026. Users now have more time to consider the implications of this new policy. It remains to be seen how Discord will address user concerns and maintain a balance between safety and privacy on their platform.
