Skyrim co-lead claims The Elder Scrolls 6’s helm was once promised to him, and he envisioned a plot mirroring the best Star Wars film

Insider Reveals Original Story Vision for The Elder Scrolls 6

A former Bethesda developer recently shared insights into the initial plans for The Elder Scrolls 6. Kurt Kuhlmann, known for his work on Skyrim, was originally slated to lead the development of the highly anticipated game. However, changes within the studio led to a different outcome.

In a conversation with PC Gamer, Kuhlmann disclosed that Todd Howard had assured him of a significant role in the project following the success of Skyrim. Despite this assurance, the project took a different direction with Fallout 76 and Starfield before The Elder Scrolls 6.

“It wasn’t just my expectation – I had been told that that was going to happen. And they made the decision, no, you’re not going to be the lead,” Kuhlmann explained. Reflecting on his departure from Bethesda in 2023, he acknowledged that his vision for the game diverged from the studio’s objectives.

If Kuhlmann had led the project, he envisioned a storyline akin to The Empire Strikes Back, where the Thalmor-led Aldmeri Dominion plays a central role. Rather than a traditional hero narrative, the player would have a more subtle role in shaping the outcome, focusing on preserving hope for future installments.

While Kuhlmann admitted uncertainty about the feasibility of such an ending in the current gaming landscape, his proposed direction aligns with the thematic progression set by Skyrim. The article speculates on the potential narrative impact of his vision for The Elder Scrolls 6.

With Kuhlmann’s departure, the future of the game remains uncertain. Fans can only imagine the possibilities, from a whimsical tale involving a mudcrab merchant to a grand adventure set in the Summerset Isles.
