Apple fights massive government overreach as India demands iOS source code

Apple is currently in a battle with the Indian government over a list of 83 security requirements, which includes a demand for iOS source code.

Reuters has reported that the Indian government insists on reviewing the source code of all smartphones to identify vulnerabilities.

Reuters also mentioned that the government is proposing smartphone makers like Apple to share their source code for security measures, but companies like Apple and Samsung are opposing this due to corporate secrecy and privacy policies.

Sharing the iOS source code could pose security risks as it may leak outside of Apple, making it easier for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities.

Additionally, other proposed requirements by the Indian government, such as being informed ahead of major updates or security patches, could be counterproductive.

While there is some confusion regarding the source code disclosure proposal, Apple has a history of refusing such demands, like with the Chinese government and the FBI.

It is unlikely that Apple will agree to the Indian government’s proposal, as the government has a track record of making demands and then retracting them.
