Amazon is planning a Super Amazon-mart store near Chicago

Amazon is reportedly planning to develop a 229,000-square foot retail center in Orland Park, Illinois, resembling a Walmart-like supercenter. The Orland Park Plan Commission recently voted 6-1 to approve Amazon’s proposal to use 35 acres of land for this project, as per The Information.

The retail center is expected to function as a brick-and-mortar supercenter offering groceries, general merchandise, and prepared foods. Additionally, it will serve as an Amazon fulfillment center, similar to a department store with an Amazon warehouse at the back. Customers will also have the convenience of picking up their Amazon orders at this location.

This initiative marks Amazon’s latest foray into physical stores, despite its previous closures of various brick-and-mortar locations. In 2022, the company shut down all 68 of its book stores, 4-star stores, and Pop Up shops. Furthermore, both Amazon Style clothing stores were closed in 2023. While Amazon has been focusing on its Whole Foods Market stores following its acquisition in 2017, it seems that the tech giant still harbors ambitions for its own physical retail locations.
