SpaceX will lower Starlink satellites to reduce collision risk

SpaceX has announced plans to lower approximately 4,400 of its over 9,000 Starlink satellites from 550km to 480km above Earth’s surface. This move is aimed at ensuring faster deorbiting in case of malfunctions or end-of-life scenarios, as well as reducing the risk of collisions in the lower orbit range. According to Michael Nicolls, VP of Starlink Engineering, this adjustment will help mitigate the potential dangers associated with space debris and planned satellite constellations.

Looking ahead, projections suggest that by the end of the decade, there could be a significant increase in the number of satellites operating in low Earth orbit, potentially reaching up to 70,000. This expansion is contingent on the success of both private and government-led initiatives in this space.

In 2025, SpaceX achieved remarkable milestones, conducting over 160 Falcon 9 missions, with a substantial portion dedicated to the growth of the Starlink constellation. The Starlink network now caters to 9.25 million active users across 155 countries, markets, and territories.
