Vince Zampella, Co-Creator of Call of Duty and Head of EA’s Battlefield Franchise, Passes Away

The gaming community is mourning the loss of Vince Zampella, the co-creator of Call of Duty, founder of Respawn Entertainment, and head of EA’s Battlefield franchise. Zampella tragically died in a car crash on December 22nd at the age of 55.

“We’re heartbroken by the passing of our founder and dear friend Vince Zampella,” Respawn Entertainment expressed in a statement on Twitter. “Our hearts are with his family, friends, and all who love him.”

Zampella’s legacy in the gaming industry began with his work as a producer at GameTek. He later co-founded Infinity Ward and played a pivotal role in the success of the Call of Duty franchise, among other notable projects.

Despite facing challenges in his career, including a legal battle with Activision, Zampella persevered and co-founded Respawn Entertainment. His leadership at Respawn resulted in the creation of acclaimed titles like Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

In 2021, Zampella took over the Battlefield series at EA, guiding it to new heights and cementing his reputation as a visionary creator in the gaming world.

EA paid tribute to Zampella’s profound influence on the industry, stating, “Vince’s influence on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching. His legacy will continue to shape how games are made and how players connect for generations to come.”
